Anatomie Squisite by Yuval Avital, which was inaugurated at the Civic Museums of Reggio Emilia on 9 June, is the exhibition that opens The Bestiary of the Earth of the Reggio Parma Festival: a universe of creatures and creations that take the public on an unprecedented journey through the spaces of the Museums to discover its exquisite anatomies. The exhibition marks a twofold starting point in Avital’s investigation of the human-animal: on the one hand it asks “What is a body, an organ? How do we perceive a set of things as a body? What are the boundaries between scientific anatomy and the anatomy of art?”; on the other hand, in the logic that unites the exhibitions in the program, represents the first stage, that of childhood – i.e. the game, the dream, the wonder, the subconscious.
By creating unexpected and unusual ‘kinships’ or ‘meta-bodies’, connected by chromatic, semantic, structural or imaginative symmetries, the artist invites the public to construct its own narrative. The reflection on what a body is and on the concept of complex hybridities, real and metaphorical, thus becomes a game of cross-references where something grows and proliferates, in a continuous stratification of fragments of the surrounding world and the imaginary one.
